First Work Of 2018

I was given a very unique opportunity to be a Unit Director for the latest NBC Shaun White TVC which debuted in the last add break of the 2018 NFL Super Bowl.  I directed the Super Pipe Section which was shot at Cardrona ski resort in the final hours of light working with Creative Director Jonny Dantonio, Head of production Andrew Loevenguth, Producer Matthew Wersinger, Executive Producer Adrian Shapiro Yolande Dewey, Joe Nolan, Narelle Wilson, Australian DOP Alex Dufficy, Ben Ruffel on 2nd Camera(on Movipro) Joshua Dunn as Movi Op, some of Queenstown’s finest crew  and Shaun White of coarse.

We were under the pump, pushed for time, conditions were far from perfect for Shaun, but still managed to get the goods to add to the other technical half of this production

Farm Jam 2018

My first experience with the Red Epic Dragon, Ronin 2 and Canon CN-E Glass.

2018 Started With Bang!!

To Start off the year I have decided to funnel all finances from saving for a house  into camera equipment.  A wise financial decision on my part… camera gear and electronics don’t depreciate much do they?

So now I’ve surrounded myself with pelican cases, and made something that used to be very simple  just that little bit more technical. On a more positive note though, I actually enjoy being a little flustered , I think it brings out the best in me. As long as there is coffee, I’ll shake my way through the day unscathed and might even see something I previously would have over looked if I were finding it all to easy.

New Purchases…….

Red Epic Dragon 6k Camera kit, I have a substantial kit that includes the EF Motion mount, enough media to blow the budget of most productions , heaps of battery life both V-lock and Red-Volt, and all the other must haves. Its an amazing camera!

RONIN 2 KIT

The latest and greatest DJI Pro Gimbal. This bad boy carries 30lbs/13.6kg, which is scary as hell considering that I then carry that load.

I’ve already shot two days for Redbull at Farm Jam in the South of New Zealand in a some what Run-n-gun fashion with no Easy-Rig or 3rd party support and didn’t brake my back. I admit my arms were sore, I was exhausted, but to be honest I shot the previous far Jam with the original Ronin and a Sony FS7 and found it much more taxing because I couldn’t put the thing down and you count lock the motors. The new Ronin 2 is a superior gimbal and made life pretty easy for how heavy the payload was.

Canon CN-E Glass

I thought its about time I got some Cine Glass, I’m starting out with the basics, so not getting carried away, but already I can appreciate the shift in quality from stills glass. The main reason I went with Canon is because they colour match with my existing L series Zoom lenses.   I already love them, and look forward to using them on my upcoming work in 2018.

Sachtler Flowtech 75 MS Tripod with ACE XL Head

Light, easy to carry, more functional and sensible than any tripod I’ve ever had. Enough said.

more more

Over the past few year I have worked as one of the crew for Red bull Defiance. This year was no different. Its a two day event with heli lifts to each location. Once again this year  I was one of the  Camer ops, which included shooting aerials from heli and on the ground with tracking for sound grabs/ short IVs.

I performed the tracking/movi of the ski racers for the ‘IOC Become The light’ commercial as well as being the snowboarder talent.

I also shot the behind the scenes video.

In the last month Southern Discoveries have launched a campaign to promote  Mt Nicholas Station that I shot and directed. This is one of their daily journeys filled with real farm activities, good food and other adventures.

I travelled to through Paris, Milan and Florence with Rob from http://inmotionpost.com

and Eddie and CC from E.Von Dadelszen

to shoot a piece for ASB Bank and E. Von Dadelszen.

hello again!

Hidden Mountain is the first of many work to come out this year and with over 220,000 on youtube alone its safe to say this has been the most successful project to date.  The work that has come with this production has been new and challenging which is what I’m after, it was truly a worthwhile undertaking for myself.

I produced and directed Hidden Mountain with the help of some very talented and hard working friends for redbull.com and Red Bulls youtube channel.

We spent a month building the location into what it was, check out what we got up to….

Next up was something that I shot last year with my friend Rob Steele from Inmotion post in Auckland.

Rob Produced and I directed this piece for Audi Nz

My friends Vaughan Brookfield and Tom Lynch make up The Nameless. Its a collaboration of two of my friends who work in very different industries. Vaughan is a professional landscape/commercial photographer and Tom owns Tom-tom which is an event production company based in Queenstown and Christchurch.

Canon Australia decided to get onboard with the nameless on their recent undertaking, where they set out to project moving images on to glacial ice. To find out more watch the clip below.  This also featured on The Guardian Uk’s Facebook page and their website.

Please watch the full version below though, its much better.

Apart from the above I have been working on many various Winter Olympic campaigns for the upcoming Korean Winter Olympics. Once they go live I will be sure to share.

Winter has Hit Us… finally

Its been a slow start for New Zealand this time around. Australia and Chile have been getting hit by back to back storms, but we remained dry for a while. Although we received a massive quantity of snow early on, the warm weather soon took care of this and sent us back to Autumn.

However it always comes, wether it be only for a few weeks or a heavy late season, the white stuff covers the peaks and we are reminded why this season is so special.

Here are a few pieces I’ve created so far this winter, and there’s plenty more cold days to be had.

Stay tuned.
